Changes to business rates

Find out the latest business rates multiplier and other recent changes to the business rates system

The multipliers for 2018/2019 are:

  • Standard multiplier: 50.4
  • Small-business multiplier: 49.1

Small business rate relief 

As of 1 April 2017, permanent changes have been introduced to the Small Business Rate Relief system:

  • Properties with a rateable value of £12,000 and below will receive 100% business rate relief
  • Properties with a rateable value between £12,000 and £15,000 will attract some business rate relief on a tapering scale
  • Properties with a rateable value  between £15,000 and £51,000 will be subject to the small business multiplier

March 2017 Budget changes

The government has announced changes from 1 April 2017 to help businesses who have significant increases in rates bills as a result of the 2017 revaluation:

  • Support for businesses losing small business rate relief and rural rate relief to limit increases in their bills
  • Discretionary relief for those ratepayers impacted the most

Public house relief

At the Spring Budget, the government announced a new relief scheme for pubs that have a rateable value of below £100,000.

Under the scheme, eligible pubs have been granted a £1,000 discount on their bill for 2017/2018.

The Chancellor announced in the Autumn Budget that this scheme has been extended to 2018/19.
