To be a scrap-metal dealer, you must have either a site licence or a collector's licence. You can only hold one type of licence in each local authority area

Download, complete, and return the application form with payment to the address shown on the form. You can use the form to apply for either type of licence or renew an existing licence.

We'll get in touch if we need any additional information, otherwise we'll aim to process your application in 5 working days.
Bear in mind that part of processing your application involves consulting with various authorities such as the police, fire department, and environmental health, and in some circumstances they can take up to 28 days to fully review your application and get back to us.
After reviewing the application and receiving positive responses from consultees, you'll receive the licence at your registered address.
The licence will come with conditions relating to the below, although we can add additional conditions:
If we refuse a licence, we will write to you to tell you why and how to appeal.
You must not operate without a licence. If you do, or if you break a condition of a licence, you could receive a fine of up to £5,000, and your licence could be taken away.
