Apply for a taxi drivers licence

To drive a taxi (hackney cab or private hire vehicle) you must apply for a taxi driving licence, and a taxi vehicle licence if you wish to use your own vehicle

We issue three types of driver licences:

  • Hackney Carriage
  • Private Hire
  • Dual (entitles you to drive both Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Vehicles)

The vehicle you will be using must have a vehicle licence issued by us.

Who can apply

You must:

  • be over 21 years old
  • hold a full UK or EU/EEA driving licence and have held it for 12 continuous months before the date of your application
  • must be living at the address where your driving licence is registered
  • have no unspent criminal convictions during the previous 10 years
  • have permission to work in the UK
  • provide evidence of a criminal record check from the relevant country or countries if you've lived in the UK for less than 10 years or you have spent six continuous months or more outside the UK

If you've lived in the UK for less than 10 years

If you've lived in the UK for less than 10 years or you have spent six continuous months or more outside the UK, you must provide evidence of a criminal record check from the relevant country or countries.

No decision will be made on your application until we have received this and confirmed its authenticity. The checks need to cover the ten years prior to your application.

We will need the originals of any documentation sent to us. Where these are not in English, they must be translated into English by an accredited translation body. You will have to pay for any costs involved.

How to book and pay for your test

Phone 01303 853660 to book your test.

You will need to pay the £61 fee for the test at the same time as booking your test.

Knowledge tests are held at the Civic Centre.

After passing the knowledge test

We will give you an application pack and ask you to:

  • complete an application form
  • pay the appropriate fee
  • have an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

What happens next

Once we receive your application and all the required supporting information, we will decide if you are a fit and proper person to hold a licence.

Decisions will take into account previous convictions. Our driver conditions and procedures provide more information on our approach to convictions. On occasions, an application may be referred to a licensing sub-committee to decide.

If everything is ok, we will grant a licence. You will be issued with a driver's badge and a paper licence which you will be asked to collect from the Civic Centre.

If your application is refused, we will write to you explaining the reasons why and how you can appeal.

Further information

You'll also need to apply for a taxi vehicle licence if you wish to use your own vehicle.
