Neighbourhood development orders and community right to build orders

Communities have the right to shape local development through neighbourhood development plans, neighbourhood development orders and community right to build orders.

What do neighbourhood development orders and community right to build orders do?

Neighbourhood development orders

Neighbourhood development orders grant planning permission for a particular development, or a particular class of development (for example retail or housing) in a local area.

Local people put together the order; it is approved by the planning authority and tested by an independent examiner. If the examiner gives their approval, the order is put to a local referendum.

Community right to build orders

A community right to build order is a type of neighbourhood development order. It can be used to grant outline or full planning permission for a specific development.
