2024 general election frequently asked questions

Do I need to take my polling card to vote?

You do not need to bring your polling card to the polling station in order to vote. However, you do need to bring an accepted form of photo ID.

There are 22 accepted forms of ID, including passports, driving licenses and older/disabled person’s bus passes. You may use out-of-date photo ID so long as you look the same.

What is a postal vote and how do I apply?

If you have already registered and know that you will not be able to vote in person, you can apply for a postal vote.

The deadline to apply for a postal vote for the general election is 5pm on Wednesday 19 June.

Can I hand my postal vote in at a polling station?

Yes. You can drop your ballot paper off on polling day at the Civic Centre, to your normal polling station or any other in the Folkestone & Hythe district.

There has been a slight change to the process – a return form now needs to be completed and accepted by an authorised member of staff.

Failure to do so means the postal vote has to be rejected and cannot be counted.

As a result, residents should no longer put their postal vote through the letterbox at the Civic Centre. There are no changes for those sending in postal votes via a Royal Mail post box.

What is a proxy vote and how do I apply?

If you know that you won’t be able to get to the polling station on polling day, you can ask someone you trust to cast your vote on your behalf.

When completing the application, you need to give a reason why you can’t get to the polling station in person.

This may be because you’re going to be on holiday, away with work or unable to get to your polling station due to a disability.

The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.
