Project progress

The Folkestone – A Brighter Future project is being delivered in the following phases:

Phase one – currently underway

This first phase is anticipated to run from the start of the works on 7 April 2025 to the end of May 2025.

  • A compound will be set up within Foresters Way car park and initial enabling works will start.
  • Foresters way will be closed off to vehicle traffic and there will be realignment and construction of the new carriageway/footway provision along Foresters Way/Shellons Street.
  • The bus stop adjacent to the Foresters Way car park will be temporarily suspended during this period.

Phase two

This will run for several months from May 2025 and is likely to overlap with phase three given the interconnectivity of the scheme.

  • Improvements will be made around Middelburg Square including the infilling of the two subways at the junctions with Cheriton Road and Cheriton Gardens
  • A new signalised traffic junction will be created at the Middelburg Square/Cheriton Gardens junction
  • Work will take place along the southern end of Middelburg Square including the construction of a new footway
  • Preparations will begin for the new linear bus stop arrangement along Middelburg Square. This is currently scheduled for mid-July/early August. All bus stop works on Middelburg Square will be completed before the existing bus station in Bouverie Square is closed.
  • Changes to the Radnor Park roundabout will also begin during this phase, including the installation of the new cycle lane and construction of the junction with Station Approach.
  • Tree planting and paving works will also take place along Sandgate Road

Phase three

This phase will start in July/August 2025 and run into early 2026.

  • Work will take place along Cheriton Road between Shorncliffe Road and Middelburg Square and also at Shornecliffe Road junction. This will include utility diversions and construction of rain gardens and footways.
  • Work around Middelburg Square will continue to tie in to works being completed along Cheriton Road.
  • Paving and tree works along Guildhall Street will start during this phase.

Phase four

Phase four will start in January 2026 and run for several months.

  • This please will see the start of the transformation of Bouverie Square from the existing bus station into the proposed green space including the installation of an infiltration tank to facilitate rainwater reuse.
  • A shared foot and cycle bridge will be installed to connect Guildhall Street North to Guildhall Street
  • Works will continue along Cheriton Road during this period and on sections of Middelburg Square

Phase five

This is the final phase of the project which should wrap up by Summer 2026.

  • Improvements will be made to the Cheriton Road/Castle Hill Avenue Junction and works on Shellons Street.
  • The works compound within the Foresters way car park will be demobilised and final surfacing will take place.
