A team aiming to nurture new initiatives in Folkestone town centre has been appointed as part of the £19.8 million Levelling Up development.
Two companies will share the challenge of bringing vibrancy to the pedestrianised shopping areas of Sandgate Road and Guildhall Street. Their remit will also include creating ideas for the town’s new “green heart” space in Bouverie Square.
In addition, they will investigate the creation of a test space for fledgling businesses to try out ideas in an actual marketplace.
The companies are the Folkestone Fringe, an experienced freelance team who initiated the successful development of the Harbour Arm, and The means Ltd, a placemaking consultancy with 30 years of experience in economic recovery, sustainability and growth.
Welcoming their appointment, Cllr Rich Holgate, Cabinet Member for the District Economy, said: “I am delighted with the appointment of these two companies. Both have exciting track records of achievement, and I am sure will work well together to reinvigorate areas both socially and economically.
“Through Folkestone – A Brighter Future we aim to build a legacy and future proof the town centre by creating revenue generating opportunities.”
The team will begin work immediately alongside the existing Folkestone – A Brighter Future project team. As the designs for phases one and two are finalised and construction begins in 2024, they will be trialling and testing new ideas, engaging with businesses and the public and drawing up plans to breathe new life into the town centre.
Diane Dever from Folkestone Fringe explained: “The essential revitalisation of Folkestone’s town centre, currently the missing link, will create a place for bringing ideas for goods and services to fruition. Focus and innovation here are critical to making the whole town work for all its people.”
Susie Barlow from The means Ltd added: “Together we have a track record of identifying under-realised potential in spaces and reinvigorating places socially and economically. The collaboration combines strategic planning and experience of best practice from other locations with local connections and implementation.”
Folkestone – A Brighter Future is being funded by HM Government through a share of the Levelling Up Fund secured by Folkestone & Hythe District Council in 2023.
