Residents who failed to clear a build-up of waste from their back garden have been fined.

Michael Harris and Kirsty Savage did not comply with Community Protection Notices (CPNs) issued by Folkestone & Hythe District Council after neighbours raised concerns about the mess at a property in New Street, Lydd earlier this year.

In their absence, both were found guilty of breaching CPNs at a Margate Magistrates’ Court hearing on Thursday 31 October.

They were each ordered to pay a £330 fine, costs of £312.50 and a £132 victim surcharge – a total of £1,500 between them.

Cllr Polly Blakemore – Cabinet Member for Transport, Regulatory Services and Building Control – said: “This case is a clear warning that simply ignoring CPNs doesn’t make them go away.

“We tried to work with these residents but received no response despite various efforts, including final warnings. The waste was having a negative impact on neighbours and so we were left with no option but to act.”

The waste was removed by the council after the CPN was not complied with on behalf of those living in the area.
