Some industrial and commercial activities have the potential to cause pollution. These activities are subject to statutory regulation through the Pollution Prevention and Control (England & Wales) Regulations 2000.
This means any installations that are identified within the regulations must have a permit to operate.
Installations were given three classifications under the regulations. The regulation of each category of installation has been separated as follows:
- Part A1 installations - Environment Agency
- Part A2 installations - Local Authorities
- Part B installations - Local Authorities
Part A2 permits set out controls on emissions to air, land and water and they also cover other environmental matters such as waste and energy consumption. Part B permits primarily deal with emissions to air.
The Council holds a current Environmental Permitting Register.
